Anahita Social Networking Engine ™ alpha2 is now available to the tribe of partners

Working on Anahita Social Engine alpha2

We are excited to announce that Anahita Social Engine ™ alpha2 has been released to the Anahita tribe of partners last night. This is a transition release to the alpha 3 and is not available to the public.

This release took about 67 days to build since the release of Anahita alpha1 and about half of that time was spent on upgrading the Anahita code to use the most recent Nooku Framework 0.7 code. We are hoping as we build more API and improve the Anahita framework we can reduce the time between each release.

I would like to thank my best friend and business partner Ash Sanieyan who did most of the work on this release. He is the genius behind implementation of Anahita ™ framework and platform. I like to think of him as the Harry Potter of programming. This project couldn’t have been possible to this degree of quality without him. The Anahita team would also like to thank Mr. Johan Janssens and the rest of the Nooku team who have worked with us to make this release possible.

    What’s new in this release?

    • Significant performance improvement due to the changes both in the framework and database model.
    • Anahita Social Engine is now using the most recent version of Nooku Framework 0.7
    • Implementation of Person Profile privacy settings and Privacy API which can be used within the Anahita Social Apps
    • Improved implementation of the Social Graphs and also ability for people to block other unwanted people.
    • Implementation of APIs that facilitate development of all kinds of Groups social apps for a social network such as: Groups, Events, Projects, Organization pages, Fan pages, etc.
    • Implementation of Node Subscriptions API. This API allows Anahita Social ™ Applications to subscribe a person to a node and notify them later when a change occurs for the node. By default the notifications are handled via Emails, however, in the future Applications can customize this by adding their own notification handler such as SMS, iPhone Push Notification and etc.

Congrats.. Eager here.. trying to resist using socialengine.net for some products. Can we fast forward like a year? :)

    • Rastin Mehr 3:34 pm on August 1, 2010 Permalink

@Peter I really think you should try any other option that you have in mind first. If they did the job you have found your match, if not you will have a good list of reasons to come and use Anahita.

    • Peter Armenti 1:48 am on August 2, 2010 Permalink

Over the last 5+ years I’ve tried them ALL. That’s why I’m here.. and I’m a fan :) . I’m excited that anahita understands what a social network truly is and I love that joomla makes it more extensible than any other options. The forwardness of Nooku framework adds further confidence in it’s future. I’m looking for long-term projects, therefore a long term solution. I apologize if at times I may seem inpatient. It’s hard to crouch when you want to pounce :)

    • Rastin Mehr 1:40 pm on August 4, 2010 Permalink

@peter thank you so much we are thrilled to know that you are so Interested in the Anahita project. In general our strategy is not try to convince people but rather show them all the options and opportunities that Anahita provides. From my experience our partners each have had their own list of valid reasons to use Anahita as their platform of choice, and hopefully you will find your platform of choice soon as a result of your research. You don’t have to apologize, we really enjoy reading your comments and answer them as best as we can. Thank you for all your contributions so far on the people.anahitapolis.com :)

Officially Out of the realm of the old architecture

A while ago we have released the Anahita Social Engine ™ 0.9.4 to the tribe of partners. The new social engine code has been rewritten from ground up based on a Nodes-Graphs-Stories architecture and domain driven design. We are happy to announce that 2 of the main social applications – Anahita Social ™ Photos and Anahita Social ™ Discussions – have also been rewritten based on the new framework and platform and we are now officially done with the old code and looking forward to build all the upcoming extensions and social apps based on the new Anahita Social Engine ™ architecture.

Anahita Social ™ Photos - Album View

Our hard work is already paying off. Now it takes way less code to develop social apps and the written code is even more organized and easier to maintain. It is indeed a lot of fun developing social apps using Anahita and Nooku Frameworks!

Awesome!! When we can aspect the 0.9.5 stable release?

    • Rastin Mehr 3:28 am on May 5, 2010 Permalink

@Marco @Gio thank you gentlemen! Yes that is the goal.

@Gio – I don’t want to put out a release date, because people will take it as a promise. But soon. 0.9.5 is really about polishing 0.9.4 and having some of the essential social apps in place so we can all launch our social networking projects :)

Super update as always, really looking forward to this 0.9.5 release, promises to really be a powerful piece of kit for the joomla world.

when are we going to get a public beta????

    • Peter Armenti 5:25 pm on May 9, 2010 Permalink

in what time period do you guess that the actual release of anahita will be? At that time what license will it be? Open GPL? I don’t know if I’m reading out of date information on stuff from ’07 ’08 – has your overall direction changed since then?

    • Rastin Mehr 1:33 am on May 10, 2010 Permalink

@Josh @Peter I wouldn’t want to put out any actual release data because people by mistake that that as a promise. What I can tell you that it is unlikely that the next release – 0.9.5 – take as long as the 0.9.4 did (4-5 months). That is because we rewrote the 0.9.4 from ground up. For 0.9.5 we are polishing the code and building based on what we have already developed. It is in our interest to have everything ready yesterday! but good software development takes time and patience.

Anahita Social Engine and all the related extensions and social applications will be distributed under the GPL2 license.

All Anahita code is “free as free liberty” but NOT everything will be “free as free beer”. We will only be making the Anahita Social Engine framework and platform available for free download. In order to obtain Anahita extensions, social apps, and other service you are required to sign up as one of the paid membership plans. Currently the partners tribe is one option.

“I don’t know if I’m reading out of date information on stuff from ‘07 ‘08″

Where are you reading those information from?

“has your overall direction changed since then?”

What change are we talking about? Since 5 months ago only the Anahita software architecture has changed, but the overall vision has been the same.

    • Brandon 2:39 pm on May 19, 2010 Permalink

Hey Anahita team. I want to know when we will be able to launch our own social networks and how can a become more involved in this project.

      Thanks

    • Rastin Mehr 3:13 pm on May 19, 2010 Permalink

@Brandon – Anahita is in alpha stage. When it is stable you can use it for production websites. If you like to obtain Anahita here is the link

    • Brandon 3:32 pm on May 19, 2010 Permalink

@Rastin – Ok briliant. I see I have to pay 500$ per year? Is this completly necesary, can I not just sign up and get mailed when there is a stable version.

    • Rastin Mehr 3:40 pm on May 19, 2010 Permalink

You can follow our announcements on blog and twitter. We will be making the Anahita Social Engine for free download actually, but to receive support and access all the extensions and social apps you need to sign up for a plan.

There is a demo that you can look at right now with real people on it. If you contact us with your first name, last name, company name and a description of what your project is about and we’ll give you an account on the demo website.

    • Brandon 4:10 pm on May 19, 2010 Permalink

@Rastin – Ok, I have signed up. I am sorry though for leaving my company name out, I am still thinking of one and then still need to register it. Other wise I have filled out everything correctly, I think. Can’t wait to check it out.

    • Brandon 4:24 pm on May 19, 2010 Permalink

@Rastin – Is everything correct, for me to see the demo site?

    • Rastin Mehr 4:37 pm on May 19, 2010 Permalink

    Marking the 3000+ Code Commits

Last week we have made the alpha release of Anahita 0.9.4 available to the people and companies in the Anahita tribe of partners. This release did take a lot longer that we have estimated because this released wasn’t simply an overhaul of the previous release. We have rewritten the entire framework and platform from scratch based on a new design philosophy and that took us more than 400 hours of development hours.

We have also passed 3000 code commits to our repository (currently at revision 3077). That means over 1500 development hours since we have started coding together this project over a year ago. Anahita has gradually become the center piece and focus of our business as a commercial open source project that is enjoying a healthy organic growth.

    The Anahita project team

(Right to left: Ash, Talia, and Myself) Many thanks to our friends at the Beyounic.com for making these shirts and presenting the Anahita project at the JoomlaDay, Rome, Italy

We didn’t get the chance to make a blog announcement last week (only tweeted here and here). After releasing the code packages to our tribe members, we all immediately started testing, debugging, and reviewing our task lists and planning for the stable release date. I was simply too distracted and excited to focus on writing a blog announcement.

So what is the status of Anahita 0.9.4 Release?

Ash (Peerglobe Technology) and Talia (TACN Studio)

The Anahita version 0.9.4 release has been late and for those of us who are wondering here is why: Anahita 0.9.4 is a major evolutionary stage for this project. We are rebuilding a lot of the core code and data model business logic from ground up to move towards a true organic and flexible architecture for developing all kinds of social networks. This release is where the Anahita design philosophy is finally coming through and the code-base will be more stabilized according to the vision that we have been nurturing for this project. The details of the implementation and concept have already been shared with our partners and we will be blogging the software design concepts here as soon as we are done implementing them. We are following an old convention of “build it first, brag later”, because it is always easy to talk about software development concepts in public, yet having a working and functioning code accompanied with our words is what we are after.

We are migrating to Nooku Framework 0.7 right away

That was supposed to be done for the Anahita 0.9.5 but instead we decided to start on that right away. Our initial goal was to implement the 0.9.4 features according to the road-map and then migrate to entire code to the Nooku Framework version 0.7, however soon we have realized that we needed the more advanced framework capabilities of the Nooku Framework 0.7 in order to develop the next release of Anahita.

For the more technical minds: A social network’s data model is far more sophisticated than a Content Management System (CMS) or a read/write web project. Up to now we have been using the Nooku Framework version 0.6.3 which provided us models, dynamic tables, rows, and rowsets and that was a significant improvement over what the default Joomla! 1.5 provided us, but for the next release of Anahita we are using a domain driven design approach and Nooku Framework 0.7 is required for a cleaner implementation.

Developing the Anahita Social ™ Discussions Application

A social website often needs to have a discussion board either as a stand alone social app or as a part of other social hubs such as Groups, Events, Organizations and such.

In the quest for finding a simple and organic design inspiration for developing a discussion board for the Anahita Social Engine I have been snooping around in different projects.

There are some existing forum extensions available for Joomla. In fact we did try ccBoard and realized that with some modifications to make it work with the Anahita Social Engine user profiles, it would work perfectly. So here is one good candidate.

We have also been using PHPBB3 for Tazzu Community and it seems like a complete forum out of the box and the UI is pretty good although I’ve found it to be a little too bulky for our purpose. We want something much more nimble and lighter. Besides, the user management in phpbb3 and the way it has been coded is not really our style so we’re not too sure about this one!

I must admit I have been fascinated with BBPress for quite some time. This is the discussion board app developed by the same folks who developed WordPress and these guys have a nice touch when it gets to getting the usability right.

      Sounds good :)

Just would like to add that this application requires Anahita Social Engine to be installed. All the Social applications such as Discussions and Photos will be available through the Anahitapolis support and distribution website under GPL license to the members.

    • Tomisin Akindele 9:00 am on June 20, 2009 Permalink

I look forward to this extension, you guys should bear in mind that some of your to-be-customers would want a migrator in place. Something that can help migrate users from either Jomsocial/Community Builder/Joomunity.

      Keep the good work progressing.

    • FidelGonzales 1:32 am on June 23, 2009 Permalink

Outstanding progress. Beyond the migration from social/community components, a forum migration tool from Kunena/phpBB/SMF2 to the native Anahitapolis would also be very much appreciated.

    • Rastin Mehr 1:44 am on June 23, 2009 Permalink

      @Tomisin, @FidelGonzales,

Thank you! yes migration scripts will be developed too once we get to the further stages of the project.
